Entrepreneur – a person who is between (entre) the horns (pren) of a bull (eur).

That definition might not be true, but it sure is accurate. As any Matador will tell you, it is a hell of a thing to get between the horns of a bull and even more of a thing get off the horns without losing your skin – but you can be sure it will be a seriously exciting ride while you hang on.

There may be others trying to help you and to quieten the raging bull, but strictly, you’re on your own – this is your ride and you live or die by it.

So why would anyone want to ride this bull. Most often, because the bull you have to put up with in the corporate world may be fatter and easier to hang onto (even though it is just as likely to stomp you) but it’s someone else’s bull.

So let’s look at what it takes to ride your own.

First there’s the crowd – they think you’re an idiot and they’re waiting for the blood to flow. If they look a lot like friends and family don’t be surprised.

Then there’re the breeders – they want to keep the good ones and give you the dociles or the crazies. They look a lot like the “get-rich-quick” business brokers and “can’t-fail” business owners.

Next comes the owner of the bullring – his rules, his percentage. And he’ll pull the plug on you without a qualm. Did I hear someone say he looks like a Banker.

Then there’s the staff. They are interested, even helpful – but it’s your skin and you can only hope that they’ll come through when the chips are down.

And finally there’s you. There’s a lot more to this than just putting on the fancy suit. You may be an expert on some aspect of bull, but how do you learn to ride? What makes you any different to all the other bull-riders out there? How do you feed this thing so it gives you just the right amount of va-va-voom. How do you keep it healthy so it gives you lots of little bulls? And what are you going to do with it when you are too tired to play any more?

If you can get all of that right – what a rush! How do you know you are alive if you’re not pushing the boundaries - and riding your own bull is the ultimate boundary.

PEERPOWER’s been in the Entre-pren-eur business for years. We can get you to focus on the important stuff so you can do more than just “hang on”. And we get you working with other bull riders so you can learn from each others’ successes and falls.

So if you’ve grabbed the bull by the horns and things are starting to get hot and heavy – give us a call.
