Personally I find the question interesting, but then again I am the one who asked it! If anyone has any answers I would be pleased to read them!! Bob

Bob Larcher added a discussion to the group Experiential Learning
This discussion is about the “raison d’être” of facilitators of experiential learning – asking questions! The use of questions is probably one of the oldest learning techniques know to man, as far as I am aware the whole of Socrates’ (no less) reput…

Your points in the original theme post sound fine. I like Learning Contracts, especially when they help people to take responsibility for their own learning, which seems crucial to me. I too like the like the Transfer, Translate, Transform model, a…

To be at least highly-rated, I'd say that an experiential learning activity needs to leave participants able to recognise and apply the learning to their own everyday life. "What did you learn, how do you recognise that learning, and what difference…

I am doing what I can to build a way of life that is:

Sustainable - in harmony with the Earth's biosphere (the physical ecosystem)

Satisfying - in harmony with other humans (the social-cultural ecosystem)

Soulful - in harmony with the "life force" (the spiritual ecosystem)

Great to be here! I hope Huddlemind is about about more than simply connecting (although, already a good thing in itself) and also about getting things moving and changed!!

Hi Bob, Thanks for the paper on management teams. I'm looking forward to reading it when I have a quiet few minutes.

I'm interested that you had a tutor with a gestalt background. Part of my thinking at the moment is directed at how to use the gestalt method of inquiring into 'what is' in terms of the team or the management problem, and then to formulate goals from that.

In my therapeutic work the change occurs as the client comes to know themselves fully and more deeply. In a business setting this deeper understanding of, say an organisational culture is extremely powerful. What I am working on at the moment is how to work in a more structured fashion without losing too much of the organic nature of gestalt work.

Thanks again for your paper.

Regards
Paul

Great, Bob. I think it is a matter of providing opportunity, topical debate, learning and especially to see ways of working together. I'll think about it. Groups need to capture attention - emotive stuff often is more useful than factual content, too... try stories too! all the best

Hi Bob,

Over the years I have tried on and off to get discussion going in the outdoor research group http://www.jiscmail.ac.uk/outres (quite successfully, but success never guaranteed!) Sustained discussion seems to need either controversy or a questioner/facilitator who takes temporary responsibility for facilitating discussion on the question they introduce.

I am not quite sure what stage this group is at, but as it seems quite small and quite new, maybe introductions would be helpful especially if they include something about why I joined this group or 'I'd definitely recommend this group to others if ...'

And on a technical point, I wonder if this group is set up in a way that all members automatically get messages delivered tothem by email unless they opt to change the settings. If a small group only communicates via a web page, then it is unlikely to take off. Facebook fans may check Facebook several times a day, but there is not much incentive to be a daily checker of a web page if most days there is nothing new to see. That would be very poor time management!

I hope this contributes a bit to the brainstorm and to take-off!

best wishes,

Roger

Hi Bob,

It's good to hear from you. I think what Roger and John have said is about right. I am a member of a much smaller group that gets to meet face to face every quarter and has a similar site to this. Most people don't seem to be active on the site. Until there is something controversial being said!

Perhaps something that challenges some of the orthodoxies of experiential learning?

Hi Bob,

Sorry not to have replied earlier. I am busy organising my relocation to South Africa from London so plenty going on at the moment.

In the midst of all the planning for the move I am writing my MA dissertation! I think the topic is very relevant to the experiential learning group: presence.

So apologies for being a bit slow in participating but I will certainly be keeping an eye on the discussion!

Regards
Paul
